Mahila Mandal Rep t

As I write my rst chairperson’s report, the world is still su ering

the e ects of COVID-19. Closer to home, so many of our
community members have su ered the unbearable loss of

family and friends, you are all in my thoughts during this di cult

period. The pandemic has also made us focus on what is
important -- our own health and mental wellbeing. We are all
better when we feel connected to others, hence we have put
on so many more online events this year than ever before. I am
proud to con rm that this will continue through the year!
Our rst event was bhajans in April from Shreeji Dham Haveli, Leicester. May’s
event was a talk on ovarian cancer delivered by Laura Nott and Samixa Shah.
The session was very well attended. In June we welcomed Daksha Hathi with her
talk on health and safety in the home. Our July event, a cooking demonstration
by Harsha Radia, was postponed due to the Euro 2020 tournament and, hopefully
a new date will be announced soon. The August event will hopefully have been a
success, it was to be our rst face-to-face event, subject to lockdown conditions :
A Rudree Puja by Piyushbhai Mehta at the RCT hall.
Looking to the future for this year :
       • 1st September : A talk on diabetes, which is a common problem for Asian
people. Dr Dipika Pulin Thakrar. This is an online event.
       • 2nd October : A talk on breast cancer, in line with Breast Cancer Awareness
month. Speaker TBC. This is an online event.
       • 9th October : A Navratri ladies’ lunch Garba from 12-5pm. Subject to lockdown
restrictions, we hope this will be a face-to-face event at DLC.
       • November : A month of Diwali and Jalaram Jayanti celebrations.
       • 4th December : A Christmas party for children with special needs. This will take
place from 12 noon until 4.30pm. Subject to lockdown restrictions, we hope this
will be a face-to-face event at the RCT hall.
Events for 2022 are yet to be con rmed but some of them will re ect the fact that
it is the 21st anniversary of Mahila Mandal. Online events via Zoom are here to
stay, so you can look forward to a good mixture of those next year too. We have a
packed calendar with lots of opportunities to connect, be together and improve
our wellbeing. This is only possible because of our enthusiastic, creative, and
tireless committee members, as well as our talented digital team. Their support
has been invaluable to me. I am sure you will join me in extending a heartfelt
thank you to each one of them.
In closing I would like to remind you that COVID-19 is still here. It can still disrupt our
plans and our lives at any time. We must all play our part by following guidelines to
keep ourselves and our communities safe. If you can receive a vaccination, I implore
you to do so -- this is the fastest way for us all to move onwards and upwards. Let me
end by wishing you all a wonderful summer -- stay safe and positive!
