It gives me great pleasure to extend my very best wishes to all members of the Lohana
community celebrating Diwali. Diwali, the festival of light, reflects the universal message of

victory of good over evil—one to which both those of faith and none can relate. At this testing
time, when we face numerous global challenges, we can remember the message of Diwali
which gives us hope to tackle the obstacles we face.

It is a particularly poignant message this year as we remember the 50 anniversary of the
th
expulsion of Ugandan Asians. I know many of your members will join in that commemoration,
including colleagues Lord Popat, Lord Gadhia and Baroness Vadera.
I would also like to take this opportunity to congratulate members of the Lohana community–

and the entire British Indian community– for their outstanding contributions to this country. I
wish everyone a very Happy Diwali and a prosperous New Year.
